English Class

Hi! The post of today is special because is the number 10, and this is the final blog. This is my fourth year at the University and after all this time, I’m finally completing this English cycle.

In the first semester of the second year of University I was in English ll, this course consisted mostly of classes where we did activities and vocabulary was practised, and also had a small oral presentation.

Then, the following year I attended English lll, where we had classes with activities, a slightly longer oral presentation and we started to make blogs.

And now finally in English lV we continue with the blogs..

My experience with English has been good, especially for blogs, I think it is a different way to learn about vocabulary and connection of ideas, besides it is entertaining to write about topics that are of interest to us. Although sometimes some topics were more complicated to discuss because I could not express myself well, but most of the time it was easy for me.

The creation of videos became complicated because I had to have a good pronunciation and also remember everything I had to say.

No doubt what I need to improve my English is the pronunciation at the time of speaking and expressing myself, I suppose I could have an improvement listening to much more music or watch series in English, to accustom the ear.

The truth is that in my day to day I do not use English much, only when I listen to music and I want to understand the lyrics of some song, although I want to try to learn much more because I consider it essential to handle this language well for professional and personal development.

Changes to my study programme

Hi again, everybody! Today I will talk about some changes that I would like my career or faculty to have.

To begin with, I think there is a big difference between our faculty and others from the University such as the engineering faculty or JGM in terms of infrastructure. For example, the engineering buildings, although they are old, have been renewed and today they have great technology in them, as well as comfortable and ample spaces to study. It seems that all the resources of the University of Chile are invested in this campus. In JGM is the sports center of the University and everyone can access but still, it is far from our faculty. This is why I would like to have a more adequate space to practice sports and more comfortable study spaces, but above all, a dining room where you can have a leisurely lunch, since that time of day is almost our only rest.

Regarding changes in the curriculum, I think that some courses should be implemented as elective according to the specialization you want to do in the future. The subjects such as Physicochemistry or Unit Operations are not related to the community or clinic pharmacy area, but rather to the industry, and for someone who does not care about that, it ends up being a martyr to study these courses. In addition, this would help reduce the number of semesters that we must take at the university.

While I believe that most teachers are very good at teaching, there are others that leave a lot to be desired, since they depend exclusively on a ppt to do the classes and without them they can not do anything! Sometimes I really prefer '' old school '', on the blackboard.

In my opinion...

Hi everyone! In this opportunity I will tell you my opinion about some topics.

What is your opinion about Chilean politicians?

In my opinion the Chilean politicians have a salary that is too high, which is not justified in any way, also with respect to the charges that they have, I feel that they are not the most qualified people to be in those positions.

What is your opinion about legalizing marijuana and other drugs?

I believe that the legalizing marijuana is a complicated topic because I think that although its recreational use does not generate a potential harm while it is consumed in moderation, everything in excess can be dangerous to health, so we would not know how to control it. On the other hand, I think that it should be allowed in research or plantations for medicinal use, since its multiple benefits have been demonstrated by scientists.

What is your opinion about Immigration?

My opinion about Immigration is that the people who migrate from their countries are because they want to seek a better life, they do not do it for pleasure (as many people believe), imagine how difficult it is to reach a totally unknown place in search of better opportunities! I think that countries should have a regulation in the entry of these people to keep and orderly record.

What is your opinion about legalization of abortion in the 3 cases?

In my opinion, the legalization of abortion in the 3 cases is a good first step for the country, but I think you should legislate further, since other types of cases are left out of the law, for example the contraceptive method failure. I believe that the woman have the right to decide about their bodies in an informed and safe way.

CNS - Antiparkinsonians

Hi everyone. The topic of today is very interesting for me and related to the career I study. I am taking a subject called ‘’Pharmacology of Systems l’’ and in this course I have learned about different types of drugs, one of them ‘’antiparkinsonians’’.

Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative illness characterized by an alteration of physical movement. Why does this disease occur?   What has been studied are the neurochemical changes that occur in the brain and it has been found that patients suffering from this disease do not have the colouration of the ''substance nigra'' in the brain because this area has abundant dopaminergic neurons, that is, these people suffer the death of this type of neurons.

Therefore in this disease the dopaminergic control of the loco motor function is lost. A destruction of these neurons is produced and the control they exert is lost, and as a consequence of this loss the gabaergic neuron also loses control over the movement. This is why therapies focus on increasing dopamine or decreasing cholinergic stimulation.

Some symptoms of people with Parkinson’s are: problems walking, trembling hands, hypotension, excessive salivation when talking and increased sweating.

The drug most used in this disease is the ‘’Levodopa’’, which is transformed into dopamine in the brain to increase its concentration in the synaptic space and can act on dopamine receptors, it is also a safe drug since it has few adverse effects.

It is important to know that in Chile, the prevalence of this disease is only 0,3% of the population.

Post Graduate Studies

Hi everyone! Start writing about this topic is not easy for me. I think that I still have so many years left to finish my career or in situations that may occur during this period that would mean I would be late to finish it.

But well, looking at it from another point of view, it is good to start learning about the variety of specialisations that currently exist related to my career (chemistry and pharmacy), because that is how we get the idea from where we could focus our studies. Also, studying this type of program would obviously mean greater knowledge and new skills that would train me as a professional with greater experience.

With the information I have, I liked the PhD program in Pharmaceutical Sciences, which could be done in the future. The curriculum consists of advanced pharmaceutical science and technology and research units. To finish the doctorate, a thesis must be submitted that contributes to the scientific knowledge in this area. I would like to study it in this University but if it were given the opportunity to do it abroad through some scholarship, I would happily do it!

If you ever did this study program, it would be ideal to do it in a part-time system, since with work and study it would be very stressful.

Another good option would be a Post Graduate since they are less years old and even then a refinement and updating of a specific discipline is achieved (Therapeutic equivalence could be a great option).

My future job

Hi everyone. In this post I will write about my future job.

 I would really work on the area I am currently studying, chemistry and pharmacy, especially in assistance area or in a laboratory.

These works are carried out in hospitals and laboratories, therefore it could not work outdoors but I would not have problems with that because I’ve always liked to be in contact with people and be able to help them. This would be in the case of working in hospitals or clinics and if I work in a pharmaceutical laboratory I will also be surrounded by a work team and machines.

The salary of both jobs is approximately over a million (or that the teachers have told us in the introductory courses of the careers).

Obviously I would love to be able to travel for work but I do not think that this can happen unless it is for congresses or trainings.

My plan so far would be to graduate and work the the first year in community pharmacy, either private or public, and save money to be able to travel, since in this area (community) the salary is quite good, even when one begins to work.

After traveling and savings money, I would like to study a major in clinical pharmacy, because I believe that a pharmacist can be good in a medical team to evaluate and treat the patient’s illness.

About love, pets and friendship

Hi everyone. The post of today is special for me because I can tell you about my favourite animal, my pet called ‘’Oso’’.

My little dog came to our family trough an aunt, since she adopted it at a fair. When we were visiting to my aunt, she did not have it in good condition. With my brother had always wanted to have a pet, so we saw the perfect opportunity to give this puppy a better home.

We had never had a pet in the family so we prepared a lot to wait for him, we bought him clothes, comb to brush, food, cookies and everything necessary.

We were looking forward to it until the day arrived that we went looking for it and brought it home. He arrived so small and scared, but I knew we were going to be very happy with him.

Everything was fine; we gave a lot of love and affection to him until day, when it had been approximately two months since he got home, he became ill with pancreatitis. In the veterinary, the doctors had to operate it and my puppy was very bad for a few weeks, until he was able to recover. Today, after five years, he is a happy and healthy dog.

My dog is very cute and tender, we always play to throw and catch a ball and he shows me his love licking me haha.

With my puppy I learned about love for dogs and the care they deserve. He transmits everything to me with eyes, his tail and his licks.

My favourite book and film

Hi everyone, today I am writing about my favourite book and film. When thinking about a book I remember my language’s class of the school, because the truth is that I don’t like very much reading but this book I liked very much.

On the four high school I had to read ‘’Brave New World’’ from the author Aldous Huxley,  this book is a dystopian novel largely set in a futuristic World State of genetically modified citizens and an intelligence-based social hierarchy. 

What I liked most was the world described in the novel as it is a utopia although ironic and ambiguous, where everyone is supposedly happy but they have eliminated other things like family, art, culture, science, philosophy and the love. 

If people read it, they could understand that the scientific advance should be careful and that the fundamental things of life should not be lost.

On the other hand, my favourite film is ‘’Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’’. The reason why I like this movie is because the plot is interesting and striking considering that appeared new characters will be important for the history development. 
At least once in the month I see this movie (and the other of the saga) because on the TNT channel they always do marathons haha. I recommend this movie and the complete saga to people who want to entertain themselves with fiction and magical things.

                                                                                                                                      

         

My best holiday :)

For me always the best holidays are with the family, this is why my best trip to this moment has been the one I made to Machu Picchu, Peru. This trip I made with my parents, my uncles and my cousins in February of 2017.

First of all, I must say that this trip was a true adventure for all due to the long road we traveled to reach our destination. The first thing we did was take a plane from Santiago to Arica, and then cross the border. This could be done through buses or taxis and the destination was the city of Tacna. We stayed a couple of days in that city where we walked and ate at a low price. Then we continued traveling by bus to the city of Arequipa, which lasted approximately six hours. Here we still had a long way to go even though we took another bus that would take us to Cusco. 

In this city we hired a tour to Machu Picchu.The next day a car passed us to retire to the hostel to take us to a ''hydroelectric''. From there we had to walk for 3 hours next to the train line to get to Machu Picchu. This walk was really beautiful and exhausting, we were surrounded by huge mountains, rivers and vegetation.When we arrived to the town we stayed and the next day in the morning we climbed to the ruins of Machu Picchu. 

Definitely get up there and know about the ruins and civilization in addition to appreciating the landscape has been one of the most beautiful experiences of my life.

                               

A country I would like to visit

Hi everyone! Today we starting with the session blogs and we must talk in the first post about a country I would like to visit.

A few years ago, a cousin travelled to Playa del Carmen, Mexico and I loved all the photos and their experiences that told me, is why I would like visit Mexico.

I know about  Mexico beaches, their typical food, for example tacos or burritos. The climate in the country is temperate and with tropical zones. I’ve also always heard about the typical music known as Mariachi group. In this place, specifically in Playa del Carmen, I would like swimming with dolphins, although I would do it only if they have the dolphins properly cared for. Also I would love to try all the typical food because I love to eat and the species that they use should be delicious.

Without a doubt I would live in this country because it would be a quieter lifestyle and would be surrounded by beautiful landscapes.

Post 10

Hi everyone! The post of today is special because is the number 10, and this is the final blog.

This semester turned out to be longer than normal due to student strike that we lived in the faculty, but finally it is coming to an end although we are all anxious waiting for results and trying to pass the subjects.

This time at university was very difficult and stressful for me because I had six subjects and one of them I am studying for the second time, but despite this I feel that I have learned a lot in all the courses.

An achievement of this academic semester would be to exempt me from the subject I am taking for the second time (Physico-chemistry), although there are still missing notes that the teacher must deliver, I think it is most likely.

Something that has not gone very well lately is that my grandmother who lives in the countryside has been very sick and was even hospitalized so I have been somewhat worried and sad. At least, now she has improved a little and is at home.

In general so far this year has been very good, since my family, friends and boyfriend have always been there to support me and give me spirits when I need it most.
